OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of History stands as one of the pioneering departments of Government Model Degree College, Daporijo, since its inception in 2012. From the very beginning, the department has remained committed to academic excellence and holistic development of the students. It has played a pivotal role in fostering critical thinking, historical awareness, and research aptitude among students pursuing History as their Honours or Major subject. Over the years, the department has earned distinction through the outstanding performance of its students, many of whom have secured positions among the Top Ten Rank Holders in History under Rajiv Gandhi University affiliated colleges. Several alumni have also gone on to pursue postgraduate and higher studies in reputed universities, contributing meaningfully to academia and other professional fields.
History, as an academic discipline, occupies a central position within the realm of the social sciences and is often acknowledged as the foundational or ‘mother’ discipline of the social science family. No doubt over time, the subject has undergone continuous scrutiny, reinterpretation, and methodological evolution through the contributions of eminent scholars and thinkers. Nevertheless, even in the contemporary era marked by rapid technological advancement and the rise of Artificial Intelligence, the relevance and intellectual authenticity of History remain undiminished. The discipline continues to offer critical insights into human civilization. In the absence of historical consciousness, the understanding of both the past and the future would lose coherence and depth. Thus, History stands as a transdisciplinary field of inquiry, indispensable for all who seek to comprehend the roots, trajectories, and dynamics of human civilization.
With this guiding philosophy, the Department of History, GMDCD, has been steadfast in imparting the curriculum prescribed by Rajiv Gandhi University under the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP). The department seeks to nurture in its students an awareness of their cultural and historical roots, while simultaneously empowering them to explore diverse ideas and perspectives, as per changing trajectories. In essence, the department aspires to help students give wings to their roots—to soar intellectually and creatively, yet remain grounded in the wisdom of their own heritage.
